Bayala is a Dharug-led language and cultural education initiative dedicated to revitalising Dharug Dhalang (language) and cultural knowledge on Dharug Ngurra (Country). It delivers community-based, place-based, and school learning programs.

Bayala serves Dharug and non-Dharug Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including other First Nations people and allies living and working on Dharug Ngurra. These include families, schools, educators, and organisations seeking to connect with and learn from Dharug language, culture, and Country in respectful and culturally guided ways.

What does Bayala provide?

Bayala provides language classes, curriculum-aligned school programs, cultural workshops, and language teacher training. It also develops resources such as school language programs, books, posters, and a Dharug language app.

Bayala is led by Dharug woman Jasmine Seymour and Dharawal and Dharug woman Corina Norman, as part of a collective governed by the Bayala Board of Directors. They collaborate with a Dharug language speaking group, Elders, linguists, and teachers to ensure cultural integrity and community voice.

Where is Bayala based?

Bayala operates on Dharug Ngurra, including areas in and around Sydney, Western Sydney, and the Hawkesbury–Nepean and Blue Mountains regions. Programs are delivered in person and online, reaching communities across Australia and beyond.

What kinds of classes does Bayala offer?

Bayala offers adult community language classes, school programs from Kindergarten to Year 12, early childhood sessions, teacher professional development, and Dharug-focused language workshops.

Does Bayala sell products or resources?

Yes. Bayala produces language learning resources, storybooks, cultural calendars, chant cards, posters, and songs for educational and community use. A new suite of illustrated books and teaching packs is in development.

How does Bayala connect with Country?

Bayala connects with Country through language and culture, recognising that words, stories, songs, and practices are expressions of deep relationships with Ngurra. Teaching and sharing Dharug Dhalang honours cultural knowledge and helps people reconnect with Country, community, and self.

The Dharug people are the people of the Sydney and have shared resource areas with Darkinyung, Dharawal, Gandangarra, Gurringayi, Gamarayigal, Wiradjuri people. Our language, Dharug Dhalang (also known as Darug and Sydney), is the common tongue across coastal (saltwater) and inland (freshwater). The Dharug Dhalang has also been described as Eora, North Dharawal and Gadigal. It is still the same language with minimal dialectal and variational differences.
