In May 2023, more than 300 Dharug people gathered on Burubiranggal ngurra (Country) in the Hawkesbury, coming together at Shaws Creek for a special language camp. The camp was a vibrant celebration of Dharug language and culture, where mudyin (families) and midigaa (friends) united to learn, share and connect.

Participants engaged in communicative language learning that included directional terms, songs, and dances performed in the Gurubii (Corroboree) at the end of each day. The camp built on participants’ existing knowledge from the Dharug/Darug Dhalang (Language) lessons in partnership with Dharug Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation and Dharug Custodian Aboriginal Corporation. This unique experience combined gesture and music, creating a lively and inclusive environment for all ages.

This gathering was made possible through the Indigenous Languages and Arts (ILA) grant awarded to Dharug Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation in 2021.
