Embedding Language

For us at Bayala, language is how we live and connect with one another. When we speak Dharug dhalang, we’re breathing life back into the spaces our ancestors once filled with everyday communication to look after each other and Country.

Embedding language means letting Dharug dhalang live where it belongs, in everyday moments. It’s the gentle rhythm around the kitchen table, a greeting at the school gate, the laughter between aunties and uncles, or the quiet pride of hearing our young ones use words and phrases that haven’t been spoken for generations.

Language was never meant to be locked away in books or archives. It was and still is for communication, belonging, gathering, teaching, and caring. Each time we speak, we weave those old threads of connection back into daily life. This is what we mean by embedding language. A living language, breathed and shared.

Bayala Aboriginal Corporation

Bayala Aboriginal Corporation is the Dharug-led language centre recognised by the NSW Aboriginal Languages Trust. We are a community of learners, teachers and researchers bringing the language of place, Dharug dhalang, back into daily life. Our work nurtures speakers in community through conversation, storying, song, and dance, around the fire, ceremony, and continual practice.

Your support allows us to develop new resources, record our people’s voices, train language educators, and share Dharug dhalang in homes, classrooms, and cultural gatherings.
